Seedance 2.5 vs Seedance 2.0: what changed and when to upgrade

Seedance 2.5 vs Seedance 2.0 compared: clip length, references, editing, resolution, price and release dates, and when the upgrade is worth it.

Read as Markdown

Seedance 2.5 is ByteDance's newest video model and the successor to Seedance 2.0. It doubles the clip length to 30 seconds, takes far more references, and can edit or extend a video you give it. Seedance 2.0 still renders 4K, which 2.5 does not, and it costs less per second, especially in its Fast and Mini versions.

The short answer: upgrade to Seedance 2.5 for long single shots, large reference sets and changes to existing footage. Stay on Seedance 2.0 for 4K output and for price-sensitive work at 480p to 1080p.

The limits come from the validation each model runs on SeedRouter and match the Seedance 2.0 and Seedance 2.5 API references. Both bill the same video tokens: at 720p and 1080p a second of 16:9 video is the same token count on either model, so the price gap is entirely the rate per token.

When was Seedance 2.5 released?

ByteDance's Seed team announced Seedance 2.5 on July 31, 2026, rolling it out first in its own apps, Jimeng AI and Doubao Pro, "with API access coming soon". API access followed on August 6, 2026. For comparison, Seedance 2.0 was launched on February 12, 2026, with its API arriving in April.

So yes, Seedance 2.5 is out, and it is available through the SeedRouter API today as dreamina-seedance-2-5.

What can Seedance 2.5 do that Seedance 2.0 cannot?

Three things, all confirmed in ByteDance's launch post:

  • 30-second clips in one pass. "Seedance 2.5 can generate high-quality, 30-second audio-video clips in a single pass and supports multiple rounds of extension." Seedance 2.0 stops at 15 seconds, so a long take had to be stitched from two tasks.
  • Much larger reference sets. "Users can now input up to 30 images, 10 video clips, and 10 audio clips as reference materials in a single pass." That is enough to pin down a cast of characters, a product from every angle, or a whole mood board.
  • Editing footage you already have. Send a clip as a reference video with omni_reference_task_type: "edit" and describe only what should change, or use "extend" to continue it past its last frame. Seedance 2.0 can only generate new clips.

Audio references also no longer need an image or video next to them, which makes a music-led clip simpler to set up.

When is Seedance 2.0 still the better choice?

  • 4K output. Only Seedance 2.0 renders 4K. Seedance 2.5 stops at 1080p.
  • Cost per second. Seedance 2.0 has a lower rate than 2.5, and Seedance 2.0 Fast and Mini are lower still. For short 480p or 720p clips, Mini is the cheapest second in the family.
  • Clips of 15 seconds or less with a few references. If the job fits inside Seedance 2.0's limits, the newer model's extra range is not doing anything you pay for.

The Seedance 2.0 vs Fast vs Mini guide covers how to pick inside the 2.0 family.

Is Seedance 2.5 worth the higher price?

It is worth it when the job needs one of its three new capabilities. A 25-second continuous shot costs one Seedance 2.5 task instead of two Seedance 2.0 tasks plus a visible cut. An edit to an existing clip is a single request instead of a regeneration from scratch. A campaign that must keep 20 product shots consistent is not possible at all within Seedance 2.0's 9 reference images.

It is not worth it for a 5-second 720p social clip from a text prompt. There, both models take a similar time to render in our logs (three 5-second 720p tasks each on September 25, 2026: 165–166 seconds on Seedance 2.5 and 173–199 seconds on Seedance 2.0), and Seedance 2.0 or one of its smaller versions costs less. Compare the live rates in the Seedance API pricing guide.

How do you move a request from Seedance 2.0 to Seedance 2.5?

Both models take the same ModelArk task body at the same endpoint, so most requests move by changing model. Check four things:

  1. Resolution. Change "4k" to "1080p"; 2.5 rejects 4K before any charge.
  2. Duration. Seedance 2.0 defaults to 5 seconds; Seedance 2.5 defaults to -1, where the model picks the length and you pay for the length it makes. Set duration explicitly if your budget depends on it.
  3. Ratio. With a first frame, and for edit and extend, Seedance 2.5 needs ratio to be adaptive or omitted.
  4. References. Existing reference sets keep working; you can now add more.
curl https://api.seedrouter.ai/v1/contents/generations/tasks \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $SEEDROUTER_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "model": "dreamina-seedance-2-5",
    "content": [{"type": "text", "text": "A street musician plays violin under a neon-lit awning in light rain, the camera slowly circles him"}],
    "resolution": "1080p",
    "ratio": "16:9",
    "duration": 20
  }'

Poll the returned task until it succeeds; the Seedance API guide has the full polling code.

Frequently asked questions

Is Seedance 2.5 better than Seedance 2.0?

It does more: longer clips, more references and video editing. It does not do everything better. Seedance 2.0 is the only one with 4K, and it costs less per second. Pick by the job, not by the version number.

Why is Seedance 2.5 so expensive?

Its rate per video token is higher than Seedance 2.0's. At 720p and 1080p the token count per second is the same on both, so the difference you pay is the rate. Long clips also add up: a 30-second task has six times the tokens of a 5-second one.

Can Seedance 2.5 edit a video from Seedance 2.0?

Yes. Any MP4 or MOV that meets the reference video limits can be edited or extended, whichever model made it. Host it at a public URL and send it as a reference_video.

Is Seedance 2.5 open source?

No. ByteDance has not published weights for Seedance 2.5 or Seedance 2.0, so both run only through an API.

Try both on the same prompt

Send one prompt to Seedance 2.0 and to Seedance 2.5 in the playground, compare the clips, and keep whichever the job needs. One API key and one balance cover both, credits never expire, and failed tasks are not charged.
