Is GPT Image 2 free in ChatGPT?
Yes, within limits. OpenAI's Images in ChatGPT help article says: "ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers." The ChatGPT Free Tier FAQ lists "Create images in ChatGPT" among the features of the Free plan.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.0, the ChatGPT side of GPT Image 2, on April 21, 2026. On September 8, 2026 it moved ChatGPT to Images 2.5. So a free account today generates with the GPT Image 2.5 generation, not with GPT Image 2.
Is GPT Image 2.5 free in ChatGPT?
Yes, on the same terms. OpenAI's announcement of ChatGPT Images 2.5 says it is available to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex users on all tiers, on desktop, mobile and web. The ChatGPT release notes for that launch add: "Existing image-generation limits are unchanged."
One feature is paid: "Images with thinking is available on Plus, Pro, and Business," according to the same help article. Free users get image generation and editing, but not the thinking mode.
In the API, GPT Image 2.5 ships as two models, Flare and Sunburst. OpenAI's ChatGPT help pages do not describe a way to choose between them inside ChatGPT. If you need a specific one, call it through an API. The Flare vs Sunburst guide explains the difference.
How many images can a free ChatGPT account make?
OpenAI does not publish a number. The Free Tier FAQ says that "file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools have separate usage limits" and that "ChatGPT will notify you when you reach an applicable limit." It also says image creation "can have stricter limits than paid plans."
Two practical details from the same FAQ:
- When you hit the limit, you wait until it resets; ChatGPT tells you when.
- Upgrading from Free to Plus, Pro or Business resets the limit.
Is there a free GPT Image 2 API?
No. OpenAI's GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 2.5 Flare model pages list rate limits for usage tiers 1 to 5 only, and the API is paid in advance. OpenAI's prepaid billing article sets the minimum purchase at $5 and says "purchased credits expire after 1 year."
The API bills image models by tokens. OpenAI's pricing page lists the same rates for GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst:

For GPT Image 2, OpenAI's image generation guide turns that into examples per image at 1024×1024: about $0.006 at low, $0.053 at medium and $0.211 at high quality. GPT Image 2.5 uses the same rates, but the cost per image can differ: OpenAI notes that "token consumption can differ by model and quality setting."
ChatGPT and the API are billed separately, so a ChatGPT plan does not include API credit.
How far does SeedRouter's free balance go?

What about "free unlimited" GPT Image 2 sites?
Searches for a free or unlimited GPT Image 2 turn up many third-party sites. OpenAI's pages above describe no unlimited free access: ChatGPT has usage limits, and the API has no free tier. A site that offers unlimited free images is paying for them some other way, so read its terms before uploading your own photos.
