Is GPT-6 free? Free and Go users get GPT-6 Luna in the ChatGPT desktop app. GPT-6 Astra needs a paid plan, and the API is paid per token.

Can I use GPT-6 for free in ChatGPT?
Only GPT-6 Luna, and only in two places. OpenAI's announcement of GPT-6 Sol and Luna says:
"Free and Go users can access GPT-6 Luna in the desktop app. These models are not yet available in Chat."
So on the Free plan:
- GPT-6 Luna: yes, in ChatGPT Work and Codex in the desktop app, "subject to rollout".
- GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra: no.
- Chat: no GPT-6 model. OpenAI's help center says "Free and Go users receive GPT-5.6 Luna" there.
OpenAI does not publish a usage allowance for GPT-6 Luna on the Free and Go plans.
Is GPT-6 Astra free?
No. GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model, is part of paid plans only:

OpenAI's help center adds: "A Pro subscription does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model."
Is GPT-6 free for students?
Not specifically. We found no student offer for GPT-6 Astra on OpenAI's site.
The closest program is Codex for Students, launched on March 20, 2026, before GPT-6. Verified university students in the United States and Canada can claim $100 in ChatGPT credits. OpenAI's terms say these "are ChatGPT credits", usable in Codex, and they "expire 12 months after the grant date". They are not API credits, and the terms do not name any GPT-6 model.
Is the GPT-6 API free?
No. OpenAI's model pages list GPT-6 Astra, Sol and Luna with rate limits for usage tiers 1 to 5 only, and API credit is bought in advance with a minimum purchase of $5.
The API is also billed separately from ChatGPT. OpenAI's help center says: "ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems." A Plus or Pro subscription does not include API usage.
What is the cheapest way to try GPT-6 in code?
Use a small prepaid balance and the cheapest model that does the job.
- Start with GPT-6 Luna. It is the lowest-cost GPT-6 model, and the GPT-6 pricing guide shows it costs a small fraction of GPT-6 Astra per token.
- Try it before you pay. On SeedRouter, every new account starts with a small free balance, enough for a few test requests on GPT-6 Sol or many on GPT-6 Luna. The pricing page lists the amount.
- Pay per use after that. You top up once, with no subscription, credits never expire, and a request that fails is not charged.
