Claude Fable 5.5 Release Date: Is It Out, or Still a Rumor?
Claude Fable 5.5 has not been announced by Anthropic. See where the rumor came from, why it was first called Fable 5.2, and which Claude models to use today.
Read as MarkdownClaude Fable 5.5 is not out, and Anthropic has not announced it. As of October 2, 2026, Anthropic's model overview lists Claude Fable 5.1 (claude-fable-5-1) as the current Fable model, and no Fable 5.5 model ID, price or system card exists.[1] Everything said about Fable 5.5 so far comes from posts on X, not from Anthropic.
The rumored window is "late September or early October". That date comes from one account, with no named source behind it.[5] Until Anthropic publishes a model ID, treat every Fable 5.5 claim as unconfirmed.
Is Claude Fable 5.5 out?
No. Each claim about Fable 5.5 is listed below with its source and its status on October 2, 2026:
| Claim | Where it comes from | Status |
|---|---|---|
| A new Fable model is being trained | Posts on X, September 5–10 | Unconfirmed |
| It will be called Fable 5.5 | One X account, August 13 and September 10 | Unconfirmed; also called Fable 5.2 |
| Release in late September or early October | One X account, September 10 | Unconfirmed; window now open |
| Same price as Fable 5 | One X account, August 13 | Unconfirmed; no price sheet |
| Named in Anthropic's next-model plans | Opus 5.5 announcement, September 22 | No: only Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 were named |
| Model ID in Anthropic's documentation | Models overview | None; Fable 5.1 is current |
The newest Fable is still Claude Fable 5.1, which Anthropic released on September 1, 2026, together with Claude Mythos 5.1.[2] It has a 1M-token context window and a 128K-token maximum output.[1]
Where did the Fable 5.5 rumor come from?
The rumor traces back to a handful of posts on X. Read in order, they show the same story changing its name:
| Date (2026) | What was posted |
|---|---|
| August 13 | An account posts a "Fable 5.5 Leak": Anthropic's most capable model yet, kept at Fable 5 pricing, deployment slowed by restrictions.[4] |
| September 5 | A second account writes that "Fable 5.2, or whatever it ends up being called, is expected very soon."[6] |
| September 8 | The same account says the next Fable is a new pre-training run, with an end-of-September or early-October release.[7] |
| September 10 | The first account posts that Fable 5.5 "could launch in late September or early October" as the "first fresh pretraining run for the Fable class".[5] |
| September 22 | Anthropic releases Claude Opus 5.5 and says Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 "will follow in the coming weeks". Fable is not mentioned.[3] |
| September 28 | Anthropic releases Claude Sonnet 5.5.[8] |
None of these posts includes a document, a screenshot of a model list or a named source. They are predictions, and the predicted window has not yet produced an announcement.
Is Fable 5.2 the same as Fable 5.5?
As far as the public record shows, yes: both names describe the same rumored model. In early September it was discussed as "Fable 5.2", and the posts themselves treated the name as provisional. From September 10 it was called "Fable 5.5".[5][6]
The 5.5 label now looks more likely only because Anthropic numbered Opus, Sonnet and the announced Haiku as 5.5.[3] That is an inference from naming, not evidence. Anthropic has not said that another Fable model is coming at all.
Are people already using Fable 5.5 inside Claude?
On October 1, 2026, users posted on X that they were "getting routed to Fable 5.5" on claude.ai.[11][12] The posts show that people are making the claim. They do not show a model ID, and Anthropic has not confirmed any such routing.
Anthropic's own versioning rule cuts against the idea of a silent swap. For models from the 4.6 generation onward, "Anthropic does not update the weights or configuration of an existing model ID. When an updated version is available, it ships under a new model ID."[9] The same page notes that the infrastructure around a model, such as request routing, safety classifiers and sampling, can change and "occasionally" produce small differences in behavior on an unchanged ID.[9] A change in feel is therefore not proof of a new model.
What do prediction markets say about Fable 5.5?
Many people search for Polymarket odds on Fable 5.5. The market we could find is on Manifold: "Claude Fable 5.2+ (Anthropic) release date", which counts any Fable numbered 5.2 or higher.[10] A market price reflects what traders are willing to bet. Traders have no access to Anthropic's plans, so the price is not a source for the release date.
How will you know when Fable 5.5 is real?
An actual release leaves traces that a rumor does not. Look for these, in roughly this order:
- A news entry on anthropic.com introducing the model.
- A new
claude-fable-…model ID in Anthropic's models overview. - A system card and published prices.
- The model appearing in Claude's model picker and in Claude Code's supported models.
Benchmark screenshots, routing reports and new date windows do not count. On SeedRouter, the model catalog only lists models that can actually be called, with the rate each one is billed at. A model appears there only once it is available.
What can you use instead of Fable 5.5 today?
Two current Claude models cover the work people expect from Fable 5.5:
- Claude Fable 5.1: Anthropic recommends it for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work.[1]
- Claude Opus 5.5: Anthropic says it "performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5".[3] Its models overview now suggests starting most workloads with Opus 5.5.[1]
For the differences between them, read Claude Fable 5.1 vs Fable 5 vs Opus 5.5. For prompting advice that applies today, see the Claude Fable 5.1 prompting guide. Build against a current model ID now. If a new Fable ships, moving to it means changing the model value and re-running your own checks.
Frequently asked questions
When is Claude Fable 5.5 coming out?
There is no announced date. The only window, late September or early October 2026, comes from an unsourced post on X.[5] Anthropic's September 22 announcement named Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 as its next releases, not Fable.[3]
Will Fable 5.5 cost the same as Fable 5?
Unknown. The claim that it will keep Fable 5 pricing comes from the August 13 post and has no price sheet behind it.[4] Anthropic has not published any Fable 5.5 price.
Is Claude Opus 5.5 secretly Fable 5.5?
No. Opus 5.5 is a separate model with its own ID, claude-opus-5-5. Anthropic compares it to Fable 5.1, which only means the two perform similarly on many tasks.[3]
Is there a Fable 5.5 system prompt or prompting guide?
Not from Anthropic, because the model has not been released. Material labeled "Fable 5.5 system prompt" is either guesswork or written for an earlier model. Anthropic's current prompting guidance covers Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5.
Can I call Claude Fable 5.5 through an API?
Not yet. Anthropic has published no Fable 5.5 model ID, so there is nothing to put in the model field. Any page offering "Fable 5.5 API access" today cannot be serving a model Anthropic has released under that name.
